The Ancient Monuments Society adopts Historic Buildings & Places as its new working name

The Ancient Monuments Society announced today that it has adopted ‘Historic Buildings & Places’ as its new working name.

The new name change follows on from the organisation’s recent adoption of a new Mission, Vision, and Values. As well as continuing to defend historic buildings of all types and all ages, Historic Buildings & Places will work for the benefit of communities to secure a sustainable future for historic places and built environments, celebrating heritage in all its richness and diversity.

When the Ancient Monuments Society was founded in 1924, it had the most relevant and up-to-date name that any organisation trying to defend the historic environment could have chosen. Trustees have now decided that a new name and visual identity are needed to better reflect the work of the organisation, and to help attract new members. Historic Buildings & Places will continue, as a National Amenity Society, to provide expert advice to local planning authorities and places of worship. It will also continue to champion the built heritage through its publications and educational activities.

Giles Quarme, Chairman of Historic Buildings & Places said:

“I am delighted that after a year of preparation we are now able to reveal ‘Historic Buildings & Places’ as the new name for the organisation. As we move towards our Centenary in 2024 it is more important than ever for us to be relevant to the heritage sector and to people’s lives. Trustees and I hope you will like our new branding and website and we encourage you, if you are not a member already, to join the society to discover our new-look magazine later this Autumn.”

Alongside the new working name comes a new logo and digital presence, including a refresh of social media channels and a brand new website. A new members’ magazine will also be launched in the Autumn.
